Magazines and newspapers regularly printed notices about the current issues of other periodicals. Such comments were often an exchange of friendly statements of endorsement, but sometimes also resulted in extended controversies (such as the notices about Poe's “Literati” series in Godey's Lady's Book.) Periodicals often repeated in their own pages the praises originally printed about them in the general press.
