Appendix V

POEMS BY MEMBERS OF POE’S FAMILY

Members of Poe's family were given to writing verses. His uncle Samuel is said to have been an eccentric wit — “wag” might be the better word (see the Ingram List, numbers 268, 414, and 418). A scrap of doggerel ascribed to him may be seen in Ingram's Edgar Allan Poe (1880), II, 252, though I think it is not original, but a traditional piece. Edgar's brother and sister wrote poems, and the only known composition of his wife is in verse. In the present section I give a brief biography of Poe's brother Henry and a catalogue raisonnée of his poems; a sketch of Rosalie Poe's life and texts of her two known poems, hitherto printed only in a decidedly obscure periodical; and a biography of Virginia Clemm Poe, together with the text of her only known poem, which is a valentine for her husband. I have never heard of any “poetry” ascribed to Mrs. Clemm or Neilson Poe.
