[[A Campaign Song]]

See the White Eagle soaring aloft to the sky,

Wakening the broad welkin with his loud battle cry;

Then here's the White Eagle, full daring is he,

As he sails on his pinions o'er valley and sea.

Notes:

This fragment was first attributed to Poe by his friend Gabriel Harrison, in “Edgar A. Poe,” a reminiscence in the New York Times Saturday Review for March 4, 1899. Harrison, an actor and artist, briefly owned and managed a tea and tobacco store in New York, where he met Poe about 1844. There is no surviving manuscript, nor was the song ever printed during Poe's lifetime. Instead, it was recalled by Harrison from memory.
