To ———.

I heed not that my earthly lot

Hath —— little of Earth in it —

That years of love have been forgot

In the hatred of a minute: —

I mourn not that the desolate

Are happier, sweet, than I,

But that you sorrow for my fate

Who am a passer by.

E. A. P.

Notes:

This manuscript is comprised of a revised excerpt from “To M——.” This manuscript was in the possession of Rufus W. Griswold. Poe presumably revised the poem for Mrs. Frances S. Osgood, and in so doing removed the “M” designation in the title, allowing her to read her own name into the dedication, and signed it with his initials as an autograph. The manuscript was reproduced in facsimile by George E. Woodberry in The Life of Edgar Allan Poe: Personal and Literary, Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1909,  II, between pages 328 and 329.
