Born at Washington, in Culpepper County, VA. His parents were Ezekiel
Haines and Anna Hopkins. Married Mary Ann Currie
Philpotts, about 1833. He was co-founder and editor of the American Constellation, a
Democratic newspaper. He was later an editor of the Virginia Star. He
was the
author of Mountain Buds and
Blossoms, Wove in a Rustic Garden (1825). He died in
Petersburgh, VA (brief obituary in the New Yorker, Jan. 28, 1841). A son,
Oakley Philpotts Haines, was born in Petersburgh on December 29, 1834.
