Socrates Maupin

Socrates Maupin

(Born: November 25, 1808 - Died: October 19, 1871)

Professor of chemistry at Hampden-Sydney College. Later head of the Richmond Academy. He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1853, where he remained for 15 years. Married Sally Hay Travis on December 14, 1837. He died in Lynchburg, VA, in a carriage accident. A son, Chapman Maupin, was born in Albemarle County on April 23, 1846. He had been a student at the University of Virginai in 1828, and obtained a doctor’s degree in medicine in 1830. He remained at the university for another 3 years and obtained a Master of Arts degree. He became a professor of chemistry at the Medical College of Richmond in 1838..
