(Born: April 12, 1812 - Died: April 6, 1897)

American poet. Catherine Harbeson Waterman was born in Philadelphia, PA. She married George Jojan Esling, a mercantile marine captain, in 1840. After her marriage, she continued to contribute to periodicals under her maiden name. Captain Esling died in Rio de Janeiro in 1844, after which she moved back to Philadelphia, where she remained for the rest of her life. She is buried in Greenmount Cemetery, in Philadelphia, PA. (Her death certificate states that she was born in Ireland, but the. 1830, 1850, 1870 and 1880 Federal Censuses consistently state that she was born in Philadelphia, PA.)
