The State of The Complete Bibliography of Poe Criticism, 1827-1967

Progress on the complete secondary bibliography of Poe, co-authored by Irby Cauthen, at this point is as follows: 1) By rough estimation, about 60% of all entries 1827-1960 have been compiled and annotated. 2) About 40% of all entries 1960-1964 have been compiled and annotated. 3) Thirty foreign scholars from eighteen countries (France, West Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia, Hungary, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Argentina, Finland, Mexico, East Germany, Australia, Brazil, and Canada ) have been invited to submit entries for the project. To date seventeen of them, representing nine countries, have responded and offered their help. In addition to their willingness to help, several have indicated sources for obtaining additional listings. 4) During the academic year of 1967-68, I received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, enabling me to work part-time (approximately 40%) on the project, along with teaching and administrative duties. Library resources in the Memphis, Tennessee, area are largely exhausted at this point. Hence, my procedure at present is to compile, verify, and annotate all English language entries at hand; to compile the foreign entries; to begin proofing and indexing all entries. Further listings, offprints, corrections of errors in the 1966 Checklist (Charlottesville: Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia ), and the like will be appreciated.
