In the “Advertisement,” Poe is referring to his first collection of poetry, Tamerlane and Other Poems, 1827.

John Neal was the editor of The Yankee and Boston Literary Gazette. Although Neal had rejected Poe's submission to his magazine of a poem, he encouraged Poe's efforts and praised this book when it was published.
