Rejected — “To Isaac Lea”

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

This poem appears in a letter from Poe to Isaac Lea, about May 27, 1829. Although the letter is by Poe, the poem has been traced to Hudibras, a long satirical epic by Samuel Butler, first published 1663-1678. Poe quotes other parts of the poem in his “Marginalia” and “Pinakidia” series. For further information, see Enrico Brandoli, “ ‘To Isaac Lea,’ Origin Solved” (noted in the bibliography, below).
