T. H. Chivers (New York) to Poe (New York). The inclusive dates, not necessarily accurate, are based on fragments in the Chivers Papers (CSmH, HM 24238 and others). Chivers' letter seems not to be RCL 556. [See Chase and Parks, pp. 37-39, 56-57.] [Ostrom's RCL note for 547a stated: "Two letters: one seems to have been written by Chivers in New York; one, a reply from Poe, in New York."]1845 - [June - July?] (RCL#547b) (letter text) (Not in Ostrom as a separate item. Ostrom combines items RCL 547a and 547b)
Poe (New York) to T. H. Chivers (New York) The Poe letter seems to have been composed by Chivers from memory. The approximate dating suggests the period while Poe lived at 195 East Broadway, New York (see RCL 545, 554, 583.)1845 - before July 5 (RCL#548) (letter text)

Bradley Martin collection was sold at auction by Sotheby's in January of 1990.]1845 - August 9 (RCL#555) (letter text)
Margaret Fuller (New York) to Poe (New York). [Not in Margaret Fuller's hand, but possibly by an amanuensis to keep Fuller's incognito consistent with the "X"-signature of the letter. Poe, however, docketed the letter "Miss Fuller." Still, Robert N. Hudspeth, "A Calendar of the Letters of Margaret Fuller," Studies in the American Renaissance 1977, ed. Joel Myerson (Boston: Twayne, 1978), p. 135, omits the letter.] Phillips, 2:1166-1167; see also L 526-527 (1974). Mabbott interpreted the "X" as Fuller's "famous asterisk." MS not at MB; thus unlocated.1845 - August 10 (RCL#556) (Ostrom gives the date as "before August 11.")
T. H. Chivers (Philadelphia) to Poe (New York). Cited in Chivers to Poe, 9 September 1845. [The date of the letter is fixed by an entry on Poe's "Memoranda" of the subscribers and contributors to his Penn/Stylus Magazine. On this list, Poe writes the comment: "When I write to Chivers, ask him what are the names in his letter of Aug. 10.45." Chiver's letter apparently contained the names of six potential subscribers, whose names on Poe's list are bracketed, with the note: "see Chivers Aug. 10/45."]1845 - August 11 (RCL#557)

Poe (New York) to B. B. Minor (Richmond) Cited in Minor to John Bisco, August 23, 1845: "Mr. Poe wrote me that you had paid him $10. for contributions to the Messenger. You did right in that instance. But hereafter, please pay no money to anyone for me, without my order. The1845 - August 25 (RCL#562)
arrangement I contemplated making with Mr. Poe was never consumated. His engagements with the B. Journal prevented his giving his attention to
the Messenger, without making the two works too similar in their critical departments, for separate publications." No direct printing or MS of Poe's letter is known. The Minor letter is quoted in Parke-Bernet Galleries sale, 15-16 January 1941, item 321. The $10 to which Minor refers is probably documented by the second of four receipts Poe signed to Bisco, a receipt dated April 7, 1845.

Poe (New York) to --. Anastatic circular (see RCL 588). John W. Robertson, Edgar A. Poe: A Study (San Francisco: Bruce Brough, 1921), p. 324 (F). MS presumed lost. [Ostrom incorrectly gives the facsimile as appearing in Robertson, Edgar A. Poe: A Pychopathic Study (New York: Putnams, 1921) in his 1966 checklist, and Robertson, Edgar A. Poe: A Pychopathic Study (New York: Putnams, 1923) in the 1981 revised checklist. In modifying the checklist, the date of publication was corrected, when the title was actually in error. The facsimile also appears in John W. Robertson, Commentary on the Bibliography of Edgar Allan Poe, San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1934, p. 230. (This is the second of the two volumes by Robertson on the bibliography of Poe's works.) In his notes at the University of Iowa, T. O. Mabbott commented that he thought Dr. Robertson's facsimile may be based on the Watterson (RCL 588) or Morris (RCL 589b) copies of the letter, both at the Library of Congress.]1845 - November 1845 - July 1846 (RCL#591)
