Poe (Richmond) to N. P. Willis (New York). Union Art Galleries sale, 9 May 1934 (Ford sale) [?]. MS unlocated. [Questionable authenticity.] SP $21 (1934). [American Book-Prices Current, 1935, describes this letter as "Closing Portion of a L. S. 1p., obl. 4to. Fordham, Aug. 17, 1849. To N. P. Willis, concerning a contribution to 'The Home Journal.' With 'The Cask of Amontillado' excerpted from a magazine; together 2 pieces" (p. 638). The strong sense of "too good to be true" makes one suspicious about this item even without being able to examine it. This letter purports to be from the last few months of Poe's life, to a prominent celebrity friend, mentioning two contributions, including one of Poe's most famous stories. Poe's friendship with N. P. Willis was routinely exploited by forgers such as Joseph Cosey, who was active about 1930. "The Cask of Amontillado" was printed in Godey's Lady's Book in 1846 and never reprinted during Poe's lifetime. No Poe contribution appeared in The Home Journal between "For Annie" (April 28, 1849) and Willis's obituary of Poe (October 20, 1849), which includes "Annabel Lee," presumably from Griswold's infamous "Ludwig" article of October 9, 1849 in the New York Tribune, which Willis also quotes.]1849 - August 21 (RCL#819) (letter text)

Poe (Richmond) to Susan A. Talley (Richmond). In 1878, Mrs. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) recalled: ". . . he sent a message by his sister requesting some flowers, in return for which came a dainty note of thanks, written in a tremulous hand." Poe (Richmond) to Mrs. M. St. Leon Loud (Philadelphia). L 2:727-728 (1966). MS at ViRP.1849 - after September 18 (RCL#827b)
Mrs. M. St. Leon Loud (Philadelphia) to Poe (Richmond). Though no evidence of a letter from Mrs. Loud exists, one could easily be inferred from Poe since he was to receive $100 for editing her poems and in his letter (827a ) Poe asked for a reply "by return of mail."1849 - September 28 (RCL#827c) (This entry is not in Ostrom)
Poe (Richmond) to Susan A. Talley (Richmond). In 1878, Mrs. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) recalled: "On the way [to visit an sick friend] I was met by Miss Poe [Rosalie], who delivered a note left for me by her brother, containing a MS. copy of 'Annie,' -- a poem then almost unknown, and which I had expressed a wish to see" ("Last Days of Edgar A. Poe," Scribners' Magazine, XV, March 1878, p. 714, column 2). In his notes about versions of the poem "For Annie," Thomas Ollive Mabbott says that the manuscript of the poem, and presumably the note with it, "was destroyed during the Civil War" (Poems, 1969, p. 456).1849 - (RCL#828)

Delete. Same as RCL 694. [Ostrom notes this as: "Poe to --? Bangs sale, 23 November 1894, item 219," which is the C. B. Foote Sale. In the catalogue, item 219 is dated as January 4, 1848 and described. The correspondent is not given, but it clearly agrees completely with Poe's letter to G. W. Eveleth.][The following entries, RCL#831-870, appear on Poe's "Memoranda" list of subscribers and contributors to his projected magazine The Penn, later The Stylus. The full list was printed by Alexander G. Rose III and Jeffrey A. Savoye, eds. Such Friends as These: Edgar Allan Poe's List of Subscribers and Contributors to His Dream Magazine (Baltimore: The Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, 1986). All of these entries carry the comment, "See let" or "See letter." In most cases, it is reasonable to surmise a reply by Poe. Regrettably, it is not practical, in general, to date these letters more precisely than 1840-1848. Those letters which can be dated more accurately have been added to the approriate place in the check list.]

Eucleian Society, New York University (New York, NY) to Poe. (This society advertised that its lecture of July 1, 1845 would include "the Annual Poem by Edgar A. Poe, Esq." (quoted in Poe Log, p. 539). Poe failed to appear at the lecture, claiming illness (Poe Log, p. 545). See Rose and Savoye.)n. d. (RCL#832) (This entry is not in Ostrom)
Franklin Literary Society, Jefferson College (Canonsburg, PA) to Poe. (Ostrom speculates that there was a letter of early Sept. 1836, shortly after Poe was made an honorary member, but since this entry is listed along with several other literary societies where Poe lectured around 1843-1844, it presumably refers to another letter. An article from The Richmond Times Dispatch for October 1935 comments that in going through the archives for the society at some point, the letter from Poe caught the eye of someone who clipped the signature for his collection, but regrettably discarded the rest of letter and could not recall its date or contents.)n. d. Philomathean Society, University of NY (New York, NY) to Poe. (This entry is listed with the Eucleian Society. See notes above.)n. d. (RCL#840) (This entry is not in Ostrom)
Philosophian Society, Wittenburg College (Springfield, OH) to Poe. (This letter is probably RCL item 676, from J. F. Reinman and J. H. Walker, dated February 24, 1847. As noted by William Hand Browne on his transcription of Poe's letter, Reinman and Walker were associated with the Philosophian Society of this college (see Ostrom, Letters, p. 523, note for item 253).)n. d. Union Philosophical Society, Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA) to Poe. (Poe was invited to deliver a poem at the "Literary Societies of Dickinson College" in "Carlisle, Pa" around June of 1846, as documented in Poe's letter of June 16, 1846, possibly written to Evert A. Duyckinck. The same letter also mentions an invitation to lecture at the University of Vermont. Thomas Ollive Mabbott felt that this letter might be a forgery, probably due to the embossed stationery on which it appears. The inclusion on Poe's list of the Union Literary Society of Dickinson College, however, would seem to provide confirmation of authenticity. Ostrom may account for the letter to Poe as RCL 637. No correspondence between Poe and the University of Vermont is known, but would certainly have existed if the June 16, 1846 letter is genuine. Perhaps oddly, the literary society of the University of Vermont does not appear on Poe's "Memoranda.")n. d. (RCL#844) (This entry is not in Ostrom)
Bulfinch, Steven Greenleaf (Augusta, GA) to Poe. (RCL item 137 notes a letter from Bulfinch to Poe on May 3, 1836, for which the manuscript is unlocated and no text is recorded. No correspondence between Poe and Bulfinch is known after 1836, but Poe's entry presumably refers to some later letter. In 1836, Poe was still at the Southern Literary Messenger and no other letter on Poe's list can be reliably dated before mid-1840.)n. d. (RCL#845) (This entry is not in Ostrom)
