This is the letter cited in Poe to Mrs. A. L. Richmond, about 21 January 1848 (RCL-768). Only an eight-line MS-fragment, at InU (Lilly), appears to be extant. D. Randall (1964) prints a truncated version of the fragment, p. 40. In September 1930, the Poe-Whitman Collection cost Mr. J. K Lilly $50,000. Randall, following a note by Mrs. Whitman’s ("Fragments of a letter received from Edgar Poe in the beginning of January 1849") dates the letter as "early January" [March 1960] p. 49, item 24. RCL-821a

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Miss S. A. Talley (Richmond, VA). In 1878, Mrs. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) recalled that Poe, having felt unwell for several days, ". . . sent a message by his sister [Rosalie Poe] requesting some flowers, in return for which came a dainty note of thanks, written in a tremulous hand" (Scribner’s Magazine, March 1878, 25:712, col. 1). (RCL08-821a.)

1849 - about August (?)

RCL-821b

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Miss S. A. Talley (Richmond, VA). A second letter, also established in 1878 by Mrs. Weiss, along with CL-821a: "He again wrote, inclosing a little anonymous poem which he had found in some newspaper and admired . . ." (RCL08-821b.)

RCL-823

Poe (Hygenia Hotel, Old Point Comfort, VA) to Mrs. M. Clemm (Fordham, NY). This is the letter cited in Mrs. M. Clemm to Mrs. Richmond, 15 September 1849 (RF-18). What is probably the close of this letter, a 1 by 3.5 inches clipped signature, is noted in ABC from a sale in UK, 12 November 1985, item 974, sold for ₤1,300 (see ABC 1986, p. 164). The envelope for this letter was part of the collection of Wm. E. Self, tipped into a set of the Redfield printing of Poe’s works (1850), a set presented by Mrs. Clemm to A. B. Heywood. This set was sold at a Christie’s (NY) sale, Dec. 4, 2009, item 172. Along with CL-719c, Mrs. Clemm apparently sent this MS to Sarah E. Robins, from whom it passed to Elizabeth Robins. The letter was discovered in 1985 by Frank Walker, curator of the NYU library. MS at NNYU-F (Robins); MS of close and signature is unlocated, as is the envelope. (Envelope formerly in the collections of S. H. Wakeman, G. C. Smith, and Wm. H. Koester) (LTR08-331a // RCL41-713; RCL48-823.)

RCL-826

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY). Nineteenth Century (February 1852), 5:31 (one paragraph); (W [1885], pp. 339-340; H [Works], 17:366-367; W [1909], 2:333-335; Phillips, 2:1476-1477; Quinn, pp. 632-633; Quinn & Hart pp. 24-25 (F); L [1948], 2:461-462; L [1948], 2:506 (facing) (F of portion by Poe). Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. M. St. Leon Loud (Philadelphia, PA). American Literature. (March 1963), 35:80-81; L [1966], 2:727-728. MS at ViRP. (LTR66-334 // RCL66-827a.)

1849 - after September 18

RCL-827b

Mrs. M. St. Leon Loud (Philadelphia, PA) to Poe (Richmond, VA). Though no evidence of a letter from Mrs. Loud exists, one could easily be inferred from Poe since he was to receive $100 for editing her poems and in his letter (RCL-827a) Poe asked for a reply "by return of mail." (RCL81-827b.)

1849 - before September 22

RCL-827c

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY). Implied by a statement left by Mrs. S. H. Whitman, Century Magazine (January 1909), 77:451, and in a letter from Mrs. S. H. Whitman to J. H. Ingram, 12 October 1875 (RF-26). The date is established by Mrs. E. Shelton to Mrs. M. Clemm, 22 September 1849 (RF-19). This letter is cited speculatively by The Poe Log, pp. 839-840, based on the claim that Mrs. Shelton had accepted Poe’s proposal, but may actually be a misrepresentation of CL-823 or CL-826. (RCL08-827c.)

1849 - September 26

RCL-827d

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Miss S. A. Talley (Richmond, VA). Cited by Mrs. S. A. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) who, in 1878, recalled: "On the way [to visit a sick friend] I was met by Miss Poe [Rosalie], who delivered a note left for me by her brother, containing a MS copy of 'Annie,' — a poem then almost unknown, and which I had expressed a wish to see" (Scribner’s Magazine, March 1878, 15:714). In his notes about versions of the poem "For Annie," TOM [Poems] says that the manuscript of the poem, and presumably the note with it, "was destroyed during the Civil War" (1:456). (RCL08-827d.)

1849 - before September 29

RCL-827e

Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY) to Poe (Philadelphia, PA) (addressing Poe as "E. S. T. Grey"). Implied by Poe to Mrs. M. Clemm, before 22 September 1849 (RCL-827c), and confirmed by a list of letters left in the Philadelphia Post Office as printed in the Philadelphia Public Ledger (October 3 and 4, 1849). (RCL08-827e.)

1849 - about Sept

RCL-827f

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. S. E. Shelton (Richmond, VA). According to Mrs. S. A. Weiss, ". . . I well remember that during his [Poe’s] absence Mrs. Shelton one day came to see Mrs. Mackenzie, with whom she had no previous acquaintance, and had a private talk with her in the parlor . . . about Mr. Poe’s letters to her" (Independent, August 25, 1904, p. 445). (RCL08-827f.)

Note: Entries CL-831 - CL-870 appear on Poe’s "Memoranda" list of subscribers and contributors to his projected magazine the Penn, later the Stylus. The full list was printed by Alexander G. Rose III and Jeffrey A. Savoye, eds., Such Friends as These: Edgar Allan Poe’s List of Subscribers and Contributors to His Dream Magazine (Baltimore: The Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, 1986). All of these entries carry the comment, "See let" or "See letter." In most cases, it is reasonable to surmise a reply by Poe. Regrettably, it is not practical, in general, to date these letters more precisely than 1840-1848. Those letters which can be dated more accurately have been added to the appropriate places in the check list.

Some Lost Letters

Mrs. Clemm stated on at least two occasions that she burned a large number of Poe’s letters. These letters were apparently personal correspondence written to Poe. "When I heard of my Eddie’s death, I was at Fordham, and I then acted as I well knew he would have wished me to do, I destroyed all the letters he had ever received from his female friends, and many others of a private nature" (Mrs. M. Clemm to T. H. Chivers, 8 December 1852, RF-23). "After Eddie’s death, I burned every letter except those relating to literature. I destroyed hundreds that were written by literary ladies. I know so well that Eddie wished me to do so. . . . I was offered by that base, base man, Griswold, $500 for a certain literary lady’s correspondence with Eddie. This was the reason I destroyed them, for fear I might by poverty be induced to do anything so dishonorable" (Mrs. M. Clemm to N. Poe, 26 August 1860, RF-24). The "certain literary lady" was presumably Mrs. Frances S. Osgood.

Mrs. Elizabeth F. Ellet wrote Poe an unknown number of letters, probably from 1845 and early 1846, which she apparently thought compromising. Having noticed, while visiting Poe, a letter from Mrs. Osgood, she feared that her own letters might be seen by others and demanded their return. Poe told Mrs. Whitman (24 November 1848, CL-745): ". . . I went immediately to my secretary . . . made a package of her letters, addressed them to her, and with my own hands left them at her door." Mrs. Ellet subsequently denied that Poe had returned her letters, and Poe found himself in a serious situation, threatened with physical abuse from Mrs. Ellet’s brother. (See The Poe Log, pp. 622-624 and J. B. Reece, American Literature., May 1970, 42:157-164.) Mrs. Ellet surely destroyed the letters. (Only two brief letters from Mrs. Ellet to Poe now survive: CL-595 and CL-597, both of which Poe appears to have kept.) As part of the same proceedings, Poe returned a package of letters from Mrs. Osgood, which presumably were also destroyed.

Mrs. Locke also wrote Poe an unknown number of letters, with the first recorded letter being February 21, 1847 (RCL-675) and ending with before May 5, 1849 (RCL-786a). In a letter to Annie Richmond, March 23, 1849 ( LTR-309), Poe states that he has "returned Mrs. [Locke] her letters," noting that they were "filled with abuse" of Mr. and Mrs. Richmond. It is highly likely that Mrs. Locke also destroyed any letters which might have proven embarrassing to her. Poe’s claim that he returned Mrs. Locke’s letters, however, is complicated by a statement, in the same letter: "my mother has some [letters from Mrs. Locke] in her possession that will prove the truth of what I say [about her abuse]." Writing to Ingram on March 13, 1877, Mrs. Richmond admitted, "he [Poe] sent me a large package of her [Mrs. Locke’s] letters, but since her death I have destroyed them" (RF-31).

Mrs. A. L. Richmond wrote to Ingram, January 14, 1877, informing him that she has sent a note to Rev. Warren H. Cudworth for "letters, etc., but he has nothing left he says" (RF-30). One can only presume that these were letters Poe had written to Rev. Cudworth rather than to Mrs. Richmond.

Notes:

The present Check List is a revision and an expansion of Ostrom’s A Check List of Letters to and from Poe (published as No. 4 in the Bibliographical Series sponsored by the Alderman Library of the University of Virginia, 1941) and subsequent editions (1948, 1966, 1974, and 1981). As a result of considerable study and analysis of Poe’s correspondence and various other resources, the original list has been essentially eclipsed, and even the revised versions have now been supplanted. (The present Check List was originally developed as a web-based version of Ostrom’s 1981 “Revised Check List,” with numerous corrections made by Jeffrey A. Savoye. That corrected and improved Check List was incorporated in the 2008 edition of The Collected Letters of Edgar Allan Poe.) Additional corrections to the present Check List are solicited, and may be provided through the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore.
