[American Book-Prices Current, 1935, describes this letter as "Closing Portion of a L. S. 1p., obl. 4to. Fordham, Aug. 17, 1849. To N. P. Willis, concerning a contribution to 'The Home Journal.' With 'The Cask of Amontillado' excerpted from a magazine; together 2 pieces" (p. 638). The strong sense of "too good to be true" makes one suspicious about this item even without being able to examine it. This letter purports to be from the last few months of Poe's life, to a prominent celebrity friend, mentioning two contributions, including one of Poe's most famous stories. Poe's friendship with N. P. Willis was routinely exploited by forgers such as Joseph Cosey, who was active about 1930. "The Cask of Amontillado" was printed in Godey's Lady's Book in 1846 and never reprinted during Poe's lifetime. No Poe contribution appeared in The Home Journal between "For Annie" (April 28, 1849) and Willis's obituary of Poe (October 20, 1849), which includes "Annabel Lee," presumably from Griswold's infamous "Ludwig" article of October 9, 1849 in the New York Tribune, which Willis also quotes.]

In 1878, Mrs. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) recalled: "On the way [to visit an sick friend] I was met by Miss Poe [Rosalie], who delivered a note left for me by her brother, containing a MS. copy of 'Annie,' -- a poem then almost unknown, and which I had expressed a wish to see" ("Last Days of Edgar A. Poe," Scribners' Magazine, XV, March 1878, p. 714, column 2). In his notes about versions of the poem "For Annie," Thomas Ollive Mabbott says that the manuscript of the poem, and presumably the note with it, "was destroyed during the Civil War" (Poems, 1969, p. 456).

An article from The Richmond Times Dispatch for October 1935 comments that in going through the archives for the society at some point, the letter from Poe caught the eye of someone who clipped the signature for his collection, but regrettably discarded the rest of letter and could not recall its date or contents.)

(Poe was invited to deliver a poem at the "Literary Societies of Dickinson College" in "Carlisle, Pa" around June of 1846, as documented in Poe's letter of June 16, 1846, possibly written to Evert A. Duyckinck. The same letter also mentions an invitation to lecture at the University of Vermont. Thomas Ollive Mabbott felt that this letter might be a forgery, probably due to the embossed stationery on which it appears. The inclusion on Poe's list of the Union Literary Society of Dickinson College, however, would seem to provide confirmation of authenticity. Ostrom may account for the letter to Poe as RCL 637. No correspondence between Poe and the University of Vermont is known, but would certainly have existed if the June 16, 1846 letter is genuine. Perhaps oddly, the literary society of the University of Vermont does not appear on Poe's "Memoranda.")

Bulfinch, Steven Greenleaf (Augusta, GA) to Poe. (RCL item 137 notes a letter from Bulfinch to Poe on May 3, 1836, for which the manuscript is unlocated and no text is recorded. No correspondence between Poe and Bulfinch is known after 1836, but Poe's entry presumably refers to some later letter. In 1836, Poe was still at the Southern Literary Messenger and no other letter on Poe's list can be reliably dated before mid-1840.)
