The Poem “Alone,” by Poe.
We are glad to print the following letter. Our comments on the poem were practically those of the English editor of Poe's works. While there seem to be at least the shadow of a doubt as to the authorship of the little poem, we are very glad to give the benefit of that doubt to Poe. Here is Whitty's letter:
Editor Brooklyn Eagle — I read inquiry from correspondent signed “Jamaica Reader,” and your reply in your issue of September 3 [[24]], Poe's poem “Alone.” You deem the poem doubtful, And quote an editor of Poe's works as an authority. While you did not give the name of the Poe editor it might be surmised that you had in. mind the late J. H. Ingram, Poe's English biographer.
I have all the original correspondence from the Century Magazine files in this matter, including Mr. Ingram's ugly charge against Mr. Didier, who discovered the Poe lines of “Alone” In a Baltimore, Maryland, lady's album. The “Century” editors were satisfied that the poem was Poe's and that the poem was written by Poe.
J. H. WHITTY, Editor,
“The Complete Poems of E. A. Poe.”
Richmond, Virginia.

Notes:
“Alone” was first printed in Scribner's Monthly, not the Century Magazine.
