Historical Texts:

Manuscripts and Authorized Printings:

  • Text-01 — “To Marie Louise” — December 1847-January 1848 — undated manuscript in the Library of Congress (Collection Concerning Edgar Allan Poe, 1845-1952, Manuscript Division), given to the library about November 1953 by Mrs. Gertrude Clarke Whittall (1867-1965). (The gift is noted in the Philadelphia Inquirer for November 17, 1953.) Mrs. Shew, later Mrs. Houghton, sent the original manuscript to J. H. Ingram on March 28, 1875. It was presumably sold about 1888, when Ingram appears to have parted with a number of his more valuable Poe items — (Mabbott text A — This is Mabbott's copy-text for this early version, based on a tracing kept to J. H. Ingram)
  • Text-02 — “To — — —” — about January-February 1848 — (speculated manuscript sent to Columbian Magazine for publication) (Although this manuscript has apparently not survived, it is presumably recorded in Text-03.)
  • Text-03 — “To — — —” — March 1848 — Columbian Magazine — (Mabbott text B — This is Mabbott's copy-text for the final version)

Reprints:

  • “[To — — —]” — June 1848 — Christian Parlor Book: Devoted to Literature, Morals, and Religion (New York, NY) — vol. 5, no. 2, p. 61 (this reprint gives the poem from the Columbian without acknowledgement, title or Poe's name, and omitting the first 6 lines. It appears in the regular section called “Editor's Miscellany,” — unsigned but presumably by Joel Tyler Headley, who was the editor — and with a short introductory note that reads: “After all, it seems not to be the easiest thing in the world to fix the precise boundary between poetry and fustian; for in a late number of a literary magazine, in the main of a very creditable character, occurs a fugitive from the pen of one by no means unknown in the world of letters, which, fugitive in our estimation, respectably endorsed though it is, would be quite as much at home on the other side of this boundary line, as in the position it now occupies. Here is a sample of it: —”) (Information for this entry was sent by Ton Fafianie to the Poe Society in an e-mail dated October 25, 2021.)
