Will Dr. Crocker have the kindness to publish the banns of matrimony between Mrs. Sarah Helen Whitman and myself, on Sunday and on Monday. When we have decided on the day of the marriage we will inform you, and will thank you to perform the ceremony.

Respy yr. Ob. st
Edgar A. Poe.

Notes:

This letter was apparently never actually sent to Dr. Crocker.

The J. K. Lilly collection of the Lilly Library at Indiana University owns both this letter and Poe's original draft, which reads:

“Dear Sir,

Will you have the kindness to publish the banns of matrimony between Mrs. Sarah Helen Whitman and myself on Sunday and Monday. When we have.”
