[[Queen of May Ode]]

Fairies guard the Queen of May,

Let her reign in Peace and Honor —

Every blessing be upon her;

May her future pathway lie,

All beneath a smiling sky.

Notes:

This fragment was first attributed to Poe by James H. Whitty, who published it in the second edition of his The Complete Poems of Edgar Allan Poe, Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1917. There is no surviving manuscript, nor any version printed during Poe's lifetime. Instead, it was recalled about 1915 by Harriet Virginia Scott, a former schoolgirl from Richmond, VA (later Mrs. Thomson, of Austin, TX). She thought the original contained four or five stanzas, of which she was, regrettably, only able to remember this one.
