TO ——   [[v]]

[[n]]

The bowers whereat, in dreams, I see

The wantonest singing birds,

[[n]]

Are lips — and all thy melody

[[n]]

Of lip-begotten words —

5

[[n]]

Thine eyes, in Heaven of heart enshrined

Then desolately fall,

O God! on my funereal mind

Like starlight on a pall —

Thy heart — thy heart! — I wake and sigh,

10

And sleep to dream till day

[[v]]

[[n]]

Of the truth that gold can never buy —

[[v]]

Of the baubles that it may.

(1829)

Notes:

Campbell makes a small error in regard to the variant on line 11. The word “the” was omitted from the 1829 text; the entire poem was omitted from the 1831 edition of the Poems. Poe inserted “the” in the Herring copy of ATMP, in preparation for RAOP.
