Pollin notes a correction for the entry on Gliddon in “Poe's ‘Some Words with a Mummy’ Reconsidered,” , p. 66n3. John G. Gliddon was the father of George Robins Gliddon (1809-1857). John G. Gliddon (1785-1844) was an English merchant long active in international trade. He served as the U. S. consul at Alexandria, Egypt (1835-1844), and died in that office in Malta after a long illness, and was replaced by Alexander Tod. In his introductory note to “Some Words with a Mummy,” Mabbott appears to make the same confusion of father and son, both strongly associated with Egypt, but only the father as the actual consul. On the other hand, an 1844 article in the New York Daily Herald (June 26, 1844, p. 1) refers to George R. Gliddon as the U. S. consul, making a precise division between the two gentlemen somewhat murky.
