Historical Texts:

Manuscripts and Authorized Printings:

  • Text-01 — “Dreams” — 1827, no original manuscript or fragments are known to exist (but this version is presumably recorded in Text-02)
  • Text-02 — “Dreams” — 1827 — TAOP — (Mabbott text A) (published about June-July 1827)
  • Text-03 — “Extract — ‘Dreams’” — October 20, 1827 — North American (Baltimore, MD) — (Mabbott text B) (In the 1926 book, Poe's Brother, p. 93, it is noted that this printing of the poem was discovered by Dr. Mabbott in 1924. The discovery was announced in “Edgar Allan Poe: A Find,” Notes and Queries (London), April 1926, vol. 150, p. 241, but without citing the date of 1924 and without reprinting the text of the poem.)
  • Text-04 — “Dreams” — about 1828 — “Wilmer” manuscript — (Mabbott text C — This is Mabbott's copy-text)

Reprints:

  • “Dreams” — June 1876 — John H. Ingram, “The Unknown Poetry of Edgar Poe,” Belgravia: A London Illustrated Magazine (London, UK) (29:509-510) (reprinted from the recently discovered copy of TAOP from the British Museum, and thus the first reprint of the poem since 1827. Ingram's text makes what appear to be editorial adjustments, such as rendering Poe's somewhat affected “sear’d” as “seared,” but does not sustain R. H. Shepherd's charge that Ingram's printed text is “shown to be valueless on account of its inaccuracies.” Ingram did not include the poem in his 1884 edition of the poems published by B. Tauchnitz, nor the 1884 edition of the Tales and Poems published by J. C. Nimmo.)
  • “Dreams” — June 8, 1876 — John H. Ingram, “Poe's Suppressed Poetry,” New York Graphic, p. 805 (reprinted from Belgravia for June 1876)
  • “Dreams” — June 21, 1876 — John H. Ingram, “Unknown Poetry of Poe,” Home Journal (New York, NY) (reprinted from Belgravia for June 1876)
  • “Dreams” — 1884 — Tamerlane and Other Poems, ed. Richard Herne Shepherd, London: George Redway (pp. 43-44)  (Having long been thought lost, a copy of the original Tamerlane and Other Poems of 1827 was discovered in the British Museum and printed in this “second edition.”)
  • “Dreams” — January 20, 1920 — Buffalo Commercial (Buffalo, NY), (no volume or issue number), p. 4, col. 4 (acknowledged as reprinted from The Poems of Edgar Allan Poe, Stone and Kimball.)
  • Dreams” — 1926 — Poe's Brother: The Poems of William Henry Leonard Poe, ed. Hervey Allen and Thomas Ollive Mabbott, New York: George H. Doran Company (pp. 49-51, including a photographic reproduction from the North American and the full text as the poem as it appeared in TAOP.)
