Historical Texts:

Manuscripts and Authorized Printings:

  • Text-01 — “Dream-Land” — 1844, no original manuscript or fragments are known to exist (but this version is presumably recorded in Text-02)
  • Text-02 — “Dream-Land” — June 1844 — Graham's — (Mabbott text A)
  • Text-03 — “Dream-Land” — before June 28, 1845 — (speculated copy of Graham's with manuscript changes made in preparation for the printing in the Broadway Journal. This marked copy no longer surivives, but the text is presumably reflected in Text-04)
  • Text-04 — “Dream-Land” — June 28, 1845 — Broadway Journal — (Mabbott text B)
  • Text-05 — “Dream-Land” — 1845 — RAOP — (Mabbott text C) (It is likely that Poe provided the same marked copy of Graham's Magazine as he had used for the Broadway Journal printing. “Fountains” has reverted back to “Mountains” and the line beginning “For the heart ...” has been joined again with the subsequent lines to form a cohesive stanza. It is possible that Poe marked a copy of the Broadway Journal and made these corrections, partly supported by the change of “gray” to “grey.” On the other hand, the fact that “King” has regained its capitalized form argues in favor of the marked Graham's copy, with the change of “grey” merely following the usual pattern for the publisher of adopting American spellings. (for Griswold's 1850 reprinting of this text, see the entry below, under reprints.)
  • Text-06 — “Dream-Land” — 1849 — two minor modifications in the J. L. Graham copy of RAOP — (Mabbott text E)
  • Text-07 — “Dream-Land” — October 23, 1849 — Richmond Examiner — (Mabbott text F — This is Mabbott's copy-text)  (Whitty and H&C erroneously give the date as October 29, 1849)

  • “Dream-Land” — a manuscript in the Huntington Library is considered suspicious. Mabbott states that it “is not regarded as authentic” (Poems, 1:343). In this version, the “black throne” of night is given as being red.
