In an Album.

To ——

1

I saw thee on thy bridal day,

When a burning blush came oer thee,

Tho Happiness around thee lay —

The world all love before thee.

2

That blush, perhaps, was maiden shame:

As such it well may pass —

Tho' its glow hath rais'd a fiercer flame

In the breast of him, alas!

3

Who saw thee on that bridal day

When that deep blush would come o'er thee

Tho' Happiness around thee lay

The world all Love before thee.

Notes:

On the manuscript, the page is numbered 32 in the upper right corner. There is also a note that reads: “4 lines omitted see last page.” That last page no longer exists, but the lines missing, identified from the poem as printed in Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1829), are as follows:

And, in thine eye, a kindling light

Of young passion free

Was all on earth, my chain'd sight

Of Loveliness might see.
