Current Poe Studies

Richard P. Benton has announced a “Symposium on Edgar Allan Poe’s Eureka” for a 1975 issue of the American Transcendental Quarterly. He especially invites papers which will advance our comprehension of Eureka by considering it as (1) scientific truth vs. mythical truth, (2) history and prophecy, (3) verbal and cosmic irony, (4) positive vs. negative romanticism, (5) pantheistic theology, (6) scientific cosmic model-building vs. hoax, (7) the overcoming of Cartesian bifurcation, (8) existentialist philosophy, (9) humorous and satirical science-fiction, and (10) a generic work related to traditional poetic cosmology. Benton also solicits papers dealing with the formal properties of Eureka, such as its (1) rhetorical strategy, (2) multiplicity of tones, (3) characteristics as a ‘prose poem,” (4) unity of effect, and (5) structural coherence. Mss. are to be between ten and forty pages and should conform to the MLA Style Sheet. The deadline for submissions is 1 September 1974 with publication scheduled for 1975. Address Professor Benton in care of the English Department, Trinity College, Hartford, CT 06106.
