This engraving is the frontispiece for the issue, facing page 231, which carries the text of the essay as the first article. The picture is oriented sideways on the page, to take advantage of the full width of the horizontal nature of the image. The caption reads:

EAST FRONT OF THE CAPITOL AT WASHINGTON CITY.

Engraved Expressly for Burtons Magazine

Under the lower left corner appears “Graham. Sculpit” and under the right, “C. Burton. Del.”

The back cover of the paper wrapper of Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine for August, 1839 promises this engraving as:

A VERY SUPERIOR

VIEW OF THE CAPITOL AT WASHINGTON

From an Original Drawing made expressly for Burton’s Magazine by a Distinguished Professor of Architectural Perspective. This Picture will afford the only correct and picture-like View of this celebrated building
