Text-01 — “To Margaret” — about 1827 —
manuscript — (Mabbott text A) (This is Mabbott’s copy-text) (This poem, along with a poem composed by
Poe’s brother, Henry, was written in the album of Miss Margaret Bassett, a young girl in Baltimore, about 1827. (As Mabbott
notes, nothing in the album is dated later than 1828.) The poem by Poe’s brother, “Woman,” is dated September 11,
1827. In 1833, Another poem in the album was written by Poe’s friend Lambert A. Wilmer. Miss Bassett moved from Baltimore to
Huntsville, AL, where she lived with her brother, John Bassett. His granddaughter, who was named Lenore, inherited the album from
her aunt, and it remained in the family and unknown to the public until it was sold at auction on March 30, 1930.)
