1843 - January ?, 1843 (vol I, no. ?) (no copies of this issue have been located)

  • Misc. - “[[Notice of the Pioneer]]” (Although no copy of the Saturday Museum issue has been located, and the date is uncertain, the notice is reprinted on the inside back cover of the Pioneer for February 1843.)

1843 - February 25, 1843 (vol I, no. 12)

(Note: no copies of this issue are known to be extant, but the Poe article survives as a pasteup of clipping, and it was reprinted in the next issue, with one additonal poem and some mostly slight differences in text.)

  • The Poets & Poetry of Philadelpha: Edgar Allan Poe” (This biographical article on Poe is unsigned and was attributed to Henry Beck Hirst by Poe, but Burton R. Pollin has disputed this attribution and claims that Poe himself is the author. There are clearly elements which must have derived from Poe, but probably at least nominally put together by Hirst from material provided by Poe. It may be best to consider it as a collaborative piece. In any case, the article is important for the original printing of one and reprints of sixteen of Poe's poems. The February printing omits one poem, “Song to the Newly-Wedded,” which was added to the March 4 printing, as noted below.)

1843 - March 4, 1843 (vol I, no. 13)

  • The Poets & Poetry of Philadelpha: Edgar Allan Poe” (This article is essentially a reprint of the February 25, 1843 biographical sketch noted above. A comment in the Museum states that the reprint would be issued, and that it would include a number of corrections. It does differ somewhat from the earlier text, including one additonal poem and several new sentences about Poe's swimming feat. Poe sent a copy of this newspaper to James R. Lowell, on October 19, 1843, but there is no reason to presume that Poe had marked any further changes on this copy: “I send you the paper with my life and portrait. The former is true in general — the latter particularly false.”)

Notes:

There is considerable controversy surrounding the attibution of several items. Because so few copies have survived from the period of Poe's chief association with the newspaper, it is possible that other unknown items were contributed and printed.
