PREFACE
The Introduction of the present volume is substantially a reprint of the chapter on Poe in the editor's American Literature. Additional and more detailed critical matter will be found in the Notes. Explanations of proper names, unusual words, and the like, are relegated to a Glossary, where they are out of the way of offending. The text which has been followed of both poems and tales appears here by permission of Herbert S. Stone and Company, of Chicago, publishers of the only complete edition of the Works of Edgar Allan Poe, edited by Edmund Clarence Stedman and George Edward Woodberry, in ten volumes.
