JOHN WILSON AND SON, CAMBRIDGE, U. S. A.

John Phelps Fruit (1855-1943) was a professor at William Jewell College, beginning in 1898. Although he retired from teaching in 1941, at the time of his death he was the head of the English Department, which still bears his name. He was also a faculty advisor of the student council. He was often referred to, respectfully and with a certain degree of awe, as “The Grand Old Man” of the college. There was a literary prize for poetry named after him. He graduated from A. B. Bethel College, where he also received his A. M. He earned his Ph.D. at Leipzig University in 1895. Prior to William Jewell College, he was a professor of English at Bethel College (1888-1898), president of Liberty Female College and a professor of Latin and Greek in Bardstown, KY. He was born in Pembroke, KY on November 22, 1855, and married Mary A. Grubbs on December 27, 1881. She died in 1916 and the couple had no children. His tombstone bears the inscription “He that doeth Truth cometh to the Light” (John 3:21 in the King James version).

The copy of this book in the holdings of the University of California library appears to be missing one leaf, which would contain pages 51 and 52. That copy is presented in both the Internet Archive and in Hathi Trust, although Hathi Trust also has other copies which do not appear to have this issue. The text for this presentation is complete, being based on an original that is not missing any pages.
