CITATIONS IN THE TEXT

The following abbreviations are used in parentheses in the text in an effort to keep the bibliographical apparatus from being too intrusive.

H Harrison edition. Harrison, James A., ed. The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe. 17 vols. 1902. Reprint. New York: AMS Press, 1965. The standard edition, though presumably to be superseded by the Mabbott edition now in progress.
B Borzoi edition. Quinn, Arthur Hobson, and O'Neill, Edward H., eds. The Complete Poems and Stories of Edgar Allan Poe. 2 vols. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. An accurate reprinting from original sources giving earlier verions [[versions]] of some of Poe's first tales. References to this edition occur principally in Chapter 3.
O Ostrom edition of letters. Ostrom, John Ward, ed. The Letters of Edgar Allan Poe. 2 vols. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1948. Reprinted with a New Foreword and Supplementary Chapter. New York: Gordian Press, 1966.
Also frequently cited for context and translated quotations are:
K Kayser, Wolfgang. Das Groteske: seine Gestaltung in Malerei and Dichtung. Oldenburg: Gerhard Stalling, 1957. Translated by Ulrich Weisstein as The Grotesque in Art and Literature. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1963. Reprint. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1965. References to this book are primarily limited to the first part of Chapter 5, “Grotesque and Arabesque.”
W Wellek, René. A History of Modern Criticism 1750-1950. 4 vols. to date. New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 1956-. References are principally supplementary in the notes.

Parenthetical citations in the text follow this pattern: the code letter is followed by the volume number, then the page number. Thus (H 16:314) is the Harrison edition, vol. 16, p. 314. (B 1:114-17) is the Borzoi Poe, vol. 1, pp. 114-17. (O 2:437) is the Ostrom edition of the letters, vol. 2, p. 437, and so on.

[[The following citations have been added for the online edition:

M Mabbott edition. Mabbott, Thomas Ollive, ed. The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe. 3 vols. Cambridge, Mass.: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1969 and 1978. Now the standard edition for the poems and short fiction.
P Pollin volumes. Pollin, Burton R., ed. The Collected Writings of Edgar Allan Poe. 5 vols. New York: Gordian Press, 1984-1995. Continuing the Mabbott edition, now the standard edition for the longer fiction, the brevities and material in the Southern Literary Messenger and the Broadway Journal.
L Levine volumes. Susan and Stuart Levine, eds. Edgar Allan Poe: Eureka and Edgar Allan Poe: Critical Theory — the Major Documents. 2 vols. Urbana and Chicago: The University of Illinois Press, 2004 and 2009. Continuing the Mabbott edition, now the standard edition for the Eureka and the selection of literary material, such as Poe's “Exordium” and “Letter to B——.”

The Mabbott edition was never fully realized due to the death of T. O. Mabbott in 1969, and of B. R. Pollin in 2009. References to these editions supplement the references that were available to Dr. Thompson in 1973, added at the appropriate points in the text in double square brackets and following the same format as was done for the references to the Harrison edition — JAS.]]

Notes:

The first three volumes of the Mabbott edition were published in 1969 and 1978, and the final volume of the fiction was edited by Burton R. Pollin, and published in 1984. These editions supercede the Harrison and Borzoi volumes. The early references have been allowed to stand, but have been supplemented by these later and more authoritative editions. Supplemental references are provided in double square brackets.
