John Ward Ostrom (1903-1993) was born in Middletown, NY. On August 21, 1929 he married Melva Kathryn Heiges Ostrom (1901-1977), in Middletown, NY. They had a daughter, Betty Jo “Jodie,” on March 15, 1931. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1926, where he was known as Jack> He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and the associate editor of the college newspaper, “The Gettysburgian.” He was apparently also the secretary of the Gettysburg Motor club and a member of the Gettysburg Dramatic Club. He obtained a Masters degree, also from Gettysburg College while teaching there. After a year of teaching English language at Nagoya, Japan, he taught at Gettysburg College 1928-1935. He obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1947. His masters thesis was a preliminary checklist of Poe's correspondence, and his doctoral dissertation a collected edition of Poe's letters, first published in 1948. Prior to Wittenberg in 1945, he taught at the Citadel, in Charleston, SC. (The catalogue of 1941-1942 lists him as a professor of English with the rank of second lieutenant.) At Wittenburg, he taught English for several decades, and eventually became the chair of the English Department, in which role he served for many years. He retired in 1972. For his 1948 edition of Poe's letters, he was awarded the distinguished Ohioana Library Association award in 1949 for the best critical and scholar work. In 1962, he was recognized by with the Distinguished Alumni award of Gettysburg College.

Chantry Music Press sold out to Augsburg Fortress in 1994, which was largely interested in Chantry's sheet music. The copyright for this book was apparently not included, and it was not renewed. In contacting Augsburg Fortress directly, they have confirmed that they do not hold a copyright and cannot grant use permission. This status leaves it in something of a grey area in regard to copyright. Richard Veler died in 2016, and many of the contributors, such as G. R. Thompson and Burton R. Pollin, have also passed on as has John W. Ostrom himself. This text, then, is presented under a broad assumption of fair use, and with the idea that all of the contributors to the book would have been pleased to have their work widely available for use, for educational purposes and without any charge for access.
