The caption is taken from the list of illustrations at the front of the book. In the original printing, the illustration bears a note of copyright by J. H. Whitty. The illustration is placed after the final page of the last chapter and facing the section half-title for the appendix material.

Poe’s desk is now in the William H. Koester collection at the HRCL of the University of Texas at Austin.
