Notes:

Frederick Clarke Prescott (1872-1957) was an assistant professor of English at Cornell University beginning in 1897, becomming a full professor in 1919. He retired in 1940. His specialty was the Psychology of Poetry. He was born in Salinas, Kansas. He obtained his A. B. degree from Harvard in 1894, but did not proceed to a graduate degree. Prior to moving to Cornell, he was an instructor in English at Radcliffe College. In 1932, he was given an honorary Doctor of Human Letters from the University of Vermont.

The cover and spine gives the title of the book as Poe's Critical Essays.

The text for this electronic version of this book was taken from an original printed form, revised for XHTML/CSS and to follow our own formatting preferences. Pagination of the original edition has been included. Although considerable effort has been made to be true to the original printed edition, some modifications have been made in formatting for this electronic presentation.

The 1981 reprint by Gordian Press adds a new preface, a new introduction, and an index to the Marginalia excerpts and the Appendix. These use Roman numeral pagination, but retaining the original pagination for the original preface and introduction. The result is necessarily some duplication of page numbers for the front matter.
